Last weekend was the Anime Central 15th Anniversary Convention at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois. I was asked to appear at the show and make a chalk art of the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which is distributed by Aniplex USA. When I first saw the art, I knew this was going to be a tough one, especially coming on the heels just two weeks after my last trip to Chicago for C2E2 and the ShiftyLook chalk art mural.
My fingers had barely healed when I hit the floor Friday morning at ACEN and began my work. But a short 22 hours later (not including the 7 hours of sketching at home before the show, totaling 29 hours in all) and…. TA DA… the mural was done. We even got to stand this one up at the end of the show which made for GREAT photos!
I wanted to thank the awesome staff of Anime Central for allowing me to be a part of such a fantastic show. And BIG thanks to Aniplex USA for providing me such excellent source artwork. Thank you also to Christine Marie Cabanos who voices Madoka and Cassandra Lee who voices Kyubey in the anime, for stopping by and hanging out at my booth when I had finished. And of course, thanks to everyone at the convention who visited me while I worked, I can only hope you were entertained and enjoyed the art.
So sit back, relax, and enjoy what took me 29 hours to make in only 4 minutes and 19 seconds. And as always, let me know what you think in the comments below!
See you at the next show.
The finished video is amazing – but so was seeing you work on it in person. Thank you for coming out!
I have a couple of shots of you working here:
