In the time I have been known as a chalk artist, I have almost exclusively made recreations of comic book art in my chalk murals. I have appeared at comic conventions and reproduced famous artists work as close to line-by-line accurate as I can make it. However, like most everyone else, I receive a lot of e-mails showing me those 3D optical illusion chalk drawings that have become famous in the past few years.

I am always asked if I make those kinds of images, and for the most part I have avoided them because there are all ready a number of people who have nearly perfected that art form. My niche has been non-distorted comic book art because that is what I admire and love to draw. That being said, I HAVE tried to make 3D street art before. My first was a simple brick hole effect that I made for an art walk in upstate New York in the Fall of 2007. Click here to take a look at that post. A year and a half later, I decided to give another chalk art optical illusion a shot. Once again, it was for the same art walk and in nearly the exact same place as before.

The weather was not on my side for this one. It was supposed to rain the day I was due to draw. I was on the verge of canceling the piece, but I watched weather.com (love that site) very closely and saw that I had about a 4 hour window in which to draw before thunderstorms were scheduled to arrive. I went for it, and the gallery of images are below. I really would like more time to try one of these 3D murals someday, and make one much bigger as I think that adds to the illusion.

On a side note, this is one of the few pieces I ever got to see obliterated by rain. This time I completed the drawing before the rain came… but one time I did not. You can see that rain-destroyed Thor chalk art here.
